Choosing Lacquered or Unlacquered

Artisan products are the ultimate unique choice for your home. Remember, handcrafted items like our taps are always individual thanks to the meticulous care that goes into making them. Something else that makes one tap completely distinctive from another is the finish that you choose for your taps. Just to add another layer to this, you may want to choose lacquered or unlacquered finishes, depending on what sort of look you're going for. So, what's the difference between lacquered and unlacquered?

Lacquered finishes are said to reduce the amount of cleaning and maintenance required. You can see the benefits of this in your bathroom, a room with lots of activity and dust flying around so any options for minimising the amount of maintenance needed are obviously useful. It's worth bearing in mind that all lacquers on taps will eventually start to deteriorate in one way or another because taps receive a lot of handling and even the highest quality coating will deteriorate in the end.

What about unlacquered finishes then? Well, more and more people are choosing unlacquered finishes which are really a return to the traditional way of looking after taps. If you're aiming to have an antique bathroom suite which wears well over time, you may be interested in unlacquered finishes. Over the weeks and months after the first installation, the taps will begin to wear as they encounter humidity and air. This leads to the brass taking on an aged appearance, just perfect for many bathrooms and kitchens that are aiming to look antique and traditional. Unlacquered taps as well will require cleaning and polishing to ensure that they start sparkling, but many people think this is a fair trade-off for taps that look naturally antique.

It's worth remembering that all taps will need cleaning and maintenance. You can read more about that from our cleaning page here. In the end, you need to decide what effect you're going for in your bathroom and, if that effect is antique or traditional, you may want to choose unlacquered finishes over lacquered ones. At Francone Bespoke Taps, we now offer unlacquered finishes only. All of these are popular, especially with individuals and families redeveloping their bathroom to give a more homely and authentic feel.
